What we're looking for:
Our goal is to hire capable book-lovers and music-lovers that work well independently and with others. As the liaison between our customers and our many books, we need people who are genial, curious, reliable, and productive. Also note that the work is physically demanding, as books are heavy and stairs are many here. Employees must be able to stand all day and carry 40-pound boxes of books up and down stairs.
Due to a lengthy training process and the many idiosyncrasies of our very independent store, Green Apple only hires permanent employees (no seasonal help). We expect employees, both part-time and full-time, to commit to at least a year, and we hope they can stay longer. We don’t grant time off between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day for obvious reasons.
We start employees at $15.00 and give raises at six months, on anniversaries, with merit or added responsibility, and according to union contract.
After passing a 90-day probationary period, all employees are eligible for the many benefits offered by Green Apple Books, including health care, dental insurance, and PAID time off for all of the following: personal holidays, three major holidays, sick time, vacation, bereavement leave, and jury duty. “Soft” benefits include employee discounts, a liberal lending library, casual dress, and most importantly, an environment filled with others who want to work closely with books and music. Many Green Applers are students, writers, musicians, and teachers.
