On September 10th at 5:00pm Green Apple Books is excited to welcome local author and illustrator Gene Luen Yang for the release of his new graphic novels Boxers & Saints. Gene will be in-store signing and sketching for all his fans.
In two volumes, Boxers & Saints (First Second) tells two parallel stories in two books. The first is of Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy whose village is abused and plundered by Westerners claiming the role of missionaries. In the second volume, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds, for the first time, a home with them.
Gene Luen Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. He has written and drawn a number of titles, including Duncan’s Kingdom, The Rosary Comic Book, Prime Baby and Animal Crackers. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. He also won an Eisner for The Eternal Smile, a collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim. Recently, he has been working on the New York Times Best-Selling comics series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
"Boxers & Saints Boxed Set Edition"
One of the greatest comics storytellers alive brings all his formidable talents to bear in this astonishing new work.
China,1898. Bands of foreign missionaries and soldiers roam the countryside, bullying and robbing Chinese peasants.
Little Bao has had enough. Harnessing the powers of ancient Chinese gods, he recruits an army of Boxers - commoners trained in kung fu who fight to free China from "foreign devils."
China, 1898. An unwanted fourth daughter, Four-Girl isn't even given a proper name by her family. She finds friendship--and a name, Vibiana--in the most unlikely of places: Christianity. But China is a dangerous place for Christians. The Boxer Rebellion is murdering Westerners and Chinese Christians alike.
